Butt Lift

The contouring of the backside is an important factor in total body proportions. Historically, the only way to enhance this part of the body was to insert implants similar to those used for breast augmentation. As plastic surgery has become more advanced, less invasive techniques have been developed. The Brazilian Butt Lift provides men and women with the opportunity to naturally improve their shape.

What is a Brazilian Butt Lift?

The Brazilian Butt Lift may be referred to as a general butt lift or a back lift. This procedure enhances the backside by strategically shifting the location of fatty tissue harvested from an area of the body, such as the abdomen or the thighs.

The technique that Dr. Schaffer uses typically incorporates the low back to remove tissue that has become loose and saggy. By lifting the tissue that sits at the low back, Dr. Schaffer creates a better foundation for the fatty tissue of the buttocks to sit within.

Benefits of a Butt Lift

Patients appreciate specific benefits from a butt lift, including:

  • No risk of adverse reaction to a foreign substance
  • Scarring is minimal
  • Long-term fat loss through liposuction
  • Natural appearance and feel

Who is a Candidate for a Back Lift?

Patients who typically achieve the best results from a butt lift, with or without a back lift, are adults who are interested in a natural-looking lift. Ideal candidates are non-smokers who are in good general health and have realistic expectations related to their best body. The unique nature of the Brazilian Butt Lift also necessitates a fair amount of available fat in one or more areas of the body. Therefore, patients who have very little body fat may not be good candidates for treatment. The Brazilian Butt Lift Procedure

Brazilian Butt Lift surgery is an outpatient procedure that is conducted in an accredited surgical facility under local or general anesthesia. Because Dr. Schaffer includes a back lift in many of his buttock augmentation procedures, there are typically four steps to surgery:

  1. An incision is made across the low back. Skin and superficial tissue are carefully removed to lift the backside and create a smooth surface. This incision is closed with sutures.
  2. Fat is harvested from a donor location such as the abdomen or thighs using liposuction.
  3. Extracted fat is processed to separate desired fat cells from unnecessary material.
  4. The most viable fat is placed into a syringe and injected at varying depths of the buttocks to add volume and shape.

A butt lift procedure can take 4 or more hours depending on the extent of augmentation decided upon for the best results.

Butt Lift Recovery

Recovery from a butt lift can take several weeks, during which patients need to follow detailed post-operative instructions.

Immediately after surgery, compression garments may be applied. The gentle, consistent pressure of these garments aids in healing by reducing swelling and minimizing disruption to incisions and injected cells. While pressure from compression garments is beneficial, it is not advisable to place direct pressure on the buttocks during recovery. Patients need to avoid sitting directly on the buttocks for approximately six weeks after surgery. Initially, all sitting may need to be avoided, the patient will lie on their stomach or side so as not to interrupt the integration of new fatty tissue. When sitting resumes, it will involve a cushion that helps distribute pressure across the outer regions of the buttocks.

After butt lift surgery, swelling and bruising are expected. These side effects decrease gradually over two to three weeks. Pain is managed with prescription pain medication initially, and then with over-the-counter medication as needed to reduce soreness and tenderness.

We understand that recovery is a significant aspect of surgery and that patients will have questions. During your consultation in our San Antonio office, we will discuss post-operative instructions for your butt lift in more detail.

Results from a Back Lift

Even with swelling, patients can notice a difference in their shape right after their butt lift procedure. Removing loose tissue from the low back and upper buttock reveals smoother skin and the higher positioning of fatty tissue on the backside. The addition of fat cells further accentuates the frame, lending to an hourglass shape.

Risks of a Brazilian Butt Lift

The risks of the Brazilian Butt Lift procedure have been frequently discussed in recent years. It is important to recognize that fat transfer to the buttocks is not a simple event. There are numerous nerves and blood vessels that travel through the buttocks and inherent risk of fat embolism through a vein.

Injecting fat at varying depths is something that requires intense attention to detail and strong familiarity with anatomical structure. The best way to reduce the risks of a butt lift is to receive care from a board-certified plastic surgeon who has been trained in the performance of fat grafting to the buttocks. In working with a qualified plastic surgeon, patients may reduce their risks to minimal chances of:

  • Bruising
  • Stretch marks
  • Infection
  • Anesthesia reaction
  • Poor wound healing
  • Asymmetrical results
  • Fat resorption
  • Excessive bleeding

A surgeon who is familiar with the Brazilian Butt Lift pays close attention to details including:

  • The amount of fat that can be safely removed
  • The amount of fat that can be safely injected
  • The depth at which fat is injected
  • The location on the buttocks where fat is injected
