Mommy Makeover in San Antonio, TX

What Is A Mommy Makeover?

Pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding can take a significant toll on a woman’s body, both physically and emotionally. Even with proper diet and exercise, oftentimes it is near impossible to restore one’s post-pregnancy body back to one’s pre-pregnancy body.

A mommy makeover is a series of cosmetic procedures that, when used in conjunction, produce stunning results. However, because every woman has different restorative needs, the combination of procedures will vary from one body to another. The mommy makeover is not a ‘cookie cutter’ procedure, but one that can be tailored to meet your individual needs, which is one reason why the mommy makeover procedure is so revolutionary in its design.

What are the Benefits of a Mommy Makeover Procedure?

Mommy makeovers center around each patient’s desired outcome. Patients who undergo a mommy makeover receive the benefits of:

  • Tighter stomach muscles, resulting in a flatter midsection
  • A decrease in fatty tissue in the midsection, thighs, buttocks, and/or back
  • A significant decrease or elimination of stretch marks on the abdomen, breasts, and/or thighs
  • Shapelier, more well-supported breasts and/or abdominal muscles

Who are the Ideal Candidates for Mommy Makeover Surgery?

Women who are healthy and want to receive more than one cosmetic procedure are candidates for a mommy makeover. Patients that have recently had children should wait until they are fully recovered from childbirth or cesarean section delivery. This is usually about 6 months after the birth of your baby. Many women wait until they know that they plan no future pregnancies to schedule their body contouring surgery.

What Procedures Can Be Included In A Mommy Makeover?

Board certified plastic surgeon, Eric S. Schaffer, MD, FACS offers the following procedures as part of your mommy makeover surgical plan.

Breast Lift:

A breast lift, also known as mastopexy, is a surgical procedure that reconstructs the breast. This is done by removing excess fat and skin, thus tightening the tissues of the breast, giving it a ‘lifted’ appearance. A breast lift can restore the breast appearance back to that of your pre-pregnancy, youthful breast contours. A mastopexy will also address the tissue surrounding the nipple which oftentimes becomes stretched over time.

Breast Augmentation:

A breast augmentation can be performed if you desire fuller, larger breasts. This can be done alone or in conjunction with a breast lift. Dr. Schaffer uses either saline or silicone breast implants to create a bust line that is, perhaps, larger and fuller than the patients’ pre-pregnancy breast size.

Breast Reduction:

Breast reduction, also known as reduction mammoplasty, is a surgical option for women who are unhappy about the size of their breasts or want to treat symptoms caused by their breast size. A breast reduction involves the removal of excess breast tissue, reduction of any excess skin, lifting the breast and nipple area, as well as occasionally reducing the width of the areola.

Tummy Tuck:

As the skin and muscle tissues in the abdominal areas stretch during pregnancy it can leave skin looser. Even after weight loss, training and dieting, the skin may remain loose and unsightly. A tummy tuck, also known as an abdominoplasty, can revitalize your stomach and abdominal area by removing excess skin and tightening the inner walls of your stomach muscles. Patients can receive liposuction with their tummy tuck to remove excess fat that develops during pregnancy as well as handle the stubborn areas that don’t respond to dieting and exercise.

Arm Lift:

An arm lift, also known as a brachioplasty is surgery to remove loose or hanging skin that can develop on the underside of the upper arm. This skin can start to hang as a result of aging, extreme changes in weight, chronic sunlight exposure, or any condition resulting in a loss of skin elasticity. Patients can also undergo an arm lift when they have no excess skin but are unhappy because of the overall girth and thickness of the upper arm.

Body Contouring:

After all the hard work and effort put into successful weight loss, you may still be disappointed with your appearance. Unless you are very fortunate, your skin may have lost elasticity and may be loose, hanging or have stretch marks. In these cases, patients may seek body contouring procedures. Body contouring involves one or more surgical procedures that lift, tighten, and improve your appearance. These procedures result in a better-proportioned body with appropriate contours.

Butt Lift:

The contouring of the backside is an important factor in having symmetrical body proportions. Historically, the only way to enhance this part of the body was to insert implants similar to the ones used for breast augmentation. As plastic surgery has become more advanced, less invasive techniques have been developed for procedures like this. The Brazilian Butt Lift provides men and women with the opportunity to naturally improve their shape.

Combining Cosmetic Surgeries for Faster Results

A mommy makeover is a combination of procedures so patients can achieve maximum impact with the mildest recovery. If we were to perform breast augmentation on it’s own, several weeks of recovery would be needed. Then, a separate tummy-tuck would require another few weeks of recovery. By combining procedures, the overall time spent recovering is decreased.

What Results Can A Mommy Makeover Achieve?

Ultimately, women report that the results of their mommy makeover make them feel much more satisfied with their own bodies. Dr. Schaffer and his staff aim to deliver patients with a tighter stomach, fuller, higher breasts, and the body they had before pregnancy. Patients often experience swelling after surgery but can expect to see results once the swelling subsides.

It is important to note that mommy makeover results can be affected by subsequent pregnancies. While it is not a safety concern, women who want to become pregnant again may be more interested in the long-term rewards of a single surgical plan.

Are There Mommy Makeover Risks?

Dr. Schaffer will discuss the risks of a mommy makeover in full detail during your consultation. The list of risks will vary based on which procedures are included in your surgical plan. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons lists the risks of a Mommy Makeover as the potential for:

  • Tissue necrosis
  • Infection
  • Bleeding
  • Scarring
  • Poor incision healing
  • Seroma or hematoma
  • Asymmetry
  • Loss of nipple sensation
  • Inhibited ability to breastfeed
  • Capsular contracture of breast implants
  • Implant leakage
  • Recurring tissue laxity
  • Unfavorable contouring
  • Blood clots or fat embolization

What Is Recovery After a Mommy Makeover Like?

Experiencing pain and discomfort for the first few days after your mommy makeover procedure is perfectly normal. Most patients will be prescribed pain medication to take at home during their recovery to manage any discomfort. Wearing your compression garments and prioritizing rest for your body within the first ten days will help optimize your healing process. Redness, swelling, and bruising in the treated areas may last for several days but may begin to disappear by the end of week two. Most patients can return to work and their normal routines within four weeks. Following your surgeon’s recommended aftercare guidelines can also help patients in recovery avoid complications during healing.

Though the healing process varies from patient to patient, it can take up to six months for the average patient to feel fully healed and without pain after their procedure. By this time, your body will have healed and adjusted to its new figure.

How Long Do The Results from a Mommy Makeover Last?

The results from a mommy makeover can last up to ten years before needing follow-up treatment to maintain the desired look. Although the mommy makeover can help reverse signs of aging, eliminate sagging skin, and restore a youthful look to the body, it cannot prevent the act of aging. Within a decade, many mothers notice the appearance of results changing simply due to aging. When this happens, Dr. Schaffer happily welcomes returning patients for a follow-up treatment.

To help your mommy makeover results last for up to a decade, consider doing the following:

  • Maintain a stable to avoid significant weight loss or weight gain
  • Eat a balanced diet
  • Establish an exercise routine
  • Prioritize rest during recovery
  • Wear your compression garments as instructed
  • Avoid future pregnancies, as this may alter the appearance of your figure
