Non-Surgical Lip Enhancement in San Antonio

What is Lip Enhancement?

Plump lips look youthful and youthful lips are always on-trend. As we age, though, the lips can gradually deflate, leaving them lined and thin. Lip enhancement is a popular, minimally-invasive procedure that is performed to give the lips the structure, shape, and volume that is needed to beautifully complement the face.

What are the benefits of Lip Augmentation?

The benefit of lip injections is that patients love what they see when they look in the mirror. The natural rejuvenation that is achieved with this treatment offers daily rewards in terms of satisfaction and confidence. Some of the benefits of hyaluronic acid dermal fillers for lip augmentation include:

  • Control over volume. Hyaluronic acid dermal fillers work by binding to water molecules. This happens immediately, so the provider can see the volumizing effects as they develop.
  • Gradual reshaping. Patients can go at their own pace when undergoing lip injections, even scheduling multiple sessions for the most gradual enhancement.
  • Minimal side effects. Swelling and redness are minor and resolve quickly. Bruising is a less common side effect that fades within a few days.
  • Bumps are unlikely and can be easily dissolved if they do occur.

Who is a Candidate for Lip Augmentation?

Many adults are great candidates for lip enhancement using a hyaluronic acid dermal filler. Hyaluronic acid is made by the body so there is very little chance of an adverse reaction. Patients who have a known allergy to lidocaine should alert the doctor; many dermal fillers contain this ingredient for optimal comfort.

Lip injections are best performed in a plastic surgery office, where we perform a thorough consultation before commencing with treatment. It is important to discuss the pros and cons of lip injections, review patient expectations, and discuss medical history. Lip augmentation may not be appropriate for people with blood-clotting problems, lupus, diabetes, or an active infection. People with a history of cold sores should tell Dr. Schaffer beforehand so, if necessary, appropriate medication can be taken to prevent an outbreak.

What are the different types of Lip Enhancement options?

Lip enhancement includes a variety of treatment options aimed at restoring or adding volume to the lips and smoothing lines around the mouth. While this can be achieved with soft silicone implants or fat injections, the most common way to augment the lips is to inject them with hyaluronic acid dermal filler. This option is minimally invasive, nonsurgical, and convenient. Lip injections achieve natural-looking fullness and shape that last 1 year or longer.

How long does Lip Augmentation take?

Lip augmentation begins with a consultation that allows us to discuss goals and expectations. Photos may be taken to record the improvement achieved with lip injections. Before administering treatment, the provider may clean the lips and apply numbing cream or ice. For a most comfortable experience, Dr. Schaffer will administer a nerve block with a local anesthetic that will in most situations completely numb the lips prior to lip enhancement. Then, the filler is injected in the parts of the lips that need shape and volume. Ice may also be applied after injections have been done.

How long after my Lip Enhancement session will I see results?

There is no waiting to see the effects of your lip enhancement treatment. Your lips will look younger and fuller when you leave the office. Because swelling occurs, you can expect this fullness to decrease slightly over about a week.

How many Lip Enhancement treatment sessions will I need?

Significant improvement can be achieved with just one appointment. Some patients choose to receive only a small amount of filler at a time but this is a completely personal preference. Dr. Schaffer will work with you to determine the best approach to achieve your desired outcome.

How long will my Lip Augmentation results last?

The effects of hyaluronic acid dermal fillers can last from 9 to 18 months. The results of lip injections last as long as it takes for the body to absorb and flush the hyaluronic acid that has been deposited beneath the skin. Generally, patients schedule touch-ups about once a year.

What are the side effects of Lip Fillers?

Swelling is the most common side effect of lip injections. This can last for a few weeks. At first, the lips may look as though they have been slightly overfilled. They may look uneven due to the temporary swelling that occurs. This side effect improves as swelling resolves. It may be helped by applying ice for about 20 minutes after injections or by taking Arnica.

Because dermal fillers contain a numbing agent, the lips may feel somewhat numb for about an hour. Patients should avoid eating, drinking, applying lipstick, and kissing for about 2 hours after their appointment. Because exercise can elevate the heart rate and an elevated heart rate can increase swelling, patients should take it easy for 24 hours after their lip injections. Alcohol should also be avoided for 24 hours before and 24 hours after this treatment to decrease the risk of pinpoint bleeding and bruising.

Lip enhancement is a common procedure but is one that should only be administered by a trained, board-certified professional. Though uncommon, there is a risk of more serious side effects such as:

  • Prolonged or severe swelling
  • Lip asymmetry
  • Infection
  • Lumps that are visible when smiling
  • Scarring, tissue stiffening, or ulceration
  • Allergic reaction
