Why You Don’t Want to Rule Out Fillers after a Facelift

Facial aging has been a hot topic of conversation for centuries. Throughout many, many years, humans have attempted to understand the complicated matter of aging and, more directly, what they can do to soften the blow. Over time, we have come to understand quite a bit. This understanding has led to innovations like brow lifts, facelifts, and non-surgical facial rejuvenation treatments. Here, we want to discuss how surgical and non-surgical techniques go together.

As an esteemed cosmetic surgeon in San Antonio, Dr. Schaffer is often asked about the value of fillers after facelift surgery. Many patients are under the impression that having a facelift either eliminates the need for future injectable treatments or stands in the way of such care. Neither is accurate.

Fillers are Valuable for Facelift Patients

One of the significant details to know about facelift surgery is that this procedure does not address every age-related concern for every person. Facelifts involve small incisions through which connective and muscle tissue are repositioned higher on the face. The skin is also gently tightened and secured to appear firmer and smoother. A facelift cannot eliminate all lines and creases, nor can it replace fullness where fatty tissue has diminished. It is for this reason that most facelift patients continue to obtain injectable treatment to enhance and maintain the successful results of their surgery.

Facelift Surgery Does Not Render Fillers Incapable

Some patients wonder if having a facelift might diminish the effectiveness of fillers and injectables like Botox. The reason is that they believe scar tissue may be unresponsive to such products. Facelift surgery is performed at the outer edges of the face, where incisions can be well-concealed around the ears. Injectable treatments focus on the central area of the face, such as the eyes, cheeks, and lips. Facelift surgery does not cause scar tissue in these areas, so does not alter the effectiveness of an injectable solution.

When to Schedule Fillers after a Facelift

Facelift procedures, whether full or mini, result in some degree of swelling. The initial effects of surgery dissipate over a week to ten days. A surgical follow-up is usually scheduled about two weeks after the procedure and may be an ideal time to observe areas of the face that could benefit from injectable treatment. Future maintenance can be scheduled routinely to support the most graceful aging process.
