Tips for a Smooth Tummy Tuck Recovery

Tummy tucks, or abdominoplasty, are performed on more than 125,000 American’s every year. This popular procedure offers an excellent solution to sagging abdominal tissue. Understandably, there are reasons to think long and hard before having a tummy tuck. While most patients say they are happy they had this body-contouring procedure, there is no sense in portraying recovery as easy.

We believe in being fully transparent with patients because we know that recovery is one of the most significant concerns that people have before surgery. A tummy tuck is not as simple as many people think. The way that the procedure can achieve such outstanding results is by repositioning the muscle and superficial tissue in the abdominal cavity and by removing skin. There’s quite a bit going on during the average tummy tuck procedure. Therefore, it is advantageous to have a few strategies in your pocket to help the healing process go more smoothly.

Tip #1 – Begin a health and wellness plan before surgery.

One of the biggest reasons that complications or unsatisfactory results may occur from abdominoplasty is that surgery takes place too quickly. There is a lot of value in developing a healthy eating plan and fitness routine prior to surgery. If there is excess weight to lose, patients should lose that weight with lifestyle, not with surgery. Doing so improves the body’s ability to heal optimally.

Tip #2 – Arrange more help than you think you’ll need.

We’re just going to put it out there: you’re going to need help after abdominoplasty. The surgical tightening of the abdominal muscles will mean that it is difficult to stand upright for the first several days after your procedure. Furthermore, prescription pain medications can make you feel somewhat groggy or unstable on your feet. This means you will need someone to be with you while you bathe and use the bathroom. You will need help with household and parenting duties. You will need help getting into and out of bed. Trust us; you will appreciate having more support than you think you need.

Tip #3 – Follow your doctor’s orders.

Maybe this is the best tip for any surgical patient. It is important to remember that your surgeon has worked with thousands of patients and has therefore seen thousands of recoveries. It is from experience that post-operative instructions have been developed. Follow them. If you’re feeling “fine,” still take your prescribed medication. If you’re feeling sore and tired, still make it a point to get up and walk around several times a day. As you heal and begin to gain energy and comfort, still take it easy. Patients can avoid most complications that occur after surgery simply by following your doctor’s advice.
