Extra Fat: Here’s What You Need to Know

Humans have experienced innumerable trends throughout history. Many of them have pertained to appearance. All this going back and forth about what it means to be “beautiful” has led us to an interesting place. It seems that, for the most part, we’ve come to realize that the idea of beauty is not to be placed in a box. There is no singular way to be beautiful and, in fact, we are all beautiful in our own way. Now, that being said, we still have a bit of a love/hate relationship with fat.

Fat is necessary for a healthy body. However, a little too much is way too much for some of us. Whatever is right for you is what you deserve. Here, we discuss what could be causing extra pounds to hang around. Knowing what may be behind stubborn fat gives us more power to get rid of it. If you’re struggling with this problem, you may have discovered that a healthy diet and exercise may not be enough.

What Causes Stubborn Fat?

  • Processed foods. If your food or snacks, or both, come from a carton or box, chances are you’re consuming more calories, carbs, salt, or sugar than your body can adequately use. The excess gets stored as fat. Sometimes, processed foods can contribute to stubborn fat despite workout habits. One way to see if this is the cause of your stubborn fat is to switch up your meals to include fresh, whole foods.
  • We’ve become a bit of a cocktail culture in recent years. More and more, we’ve poured a glass or two of wine with dinner or enjoyed happy hour with friends several times a week. This isn’t completely unhealthy. However, this habit involves drinking calories and also altering the way the body metabolizes fat for fuel. If stubborn fat is problematic, drinking is something to keep to a minimum.
  • Poor sleep. In addition to living in a cocktail culture, we also live in a society in which production is equivalent to value. We constantly push ourselves to do more and achieve more. The hustle between work and socializing and learning and domestic duties requires more time than most of us have in a day. When we need more time, where do we skimp? Sleep, of course! The problem is, when we don’t get at least seven-and-a-half hours of sleep a night, our body doesn’t produce enough of the right hormones to adequately regulate our appetite. Not only do we feel hungrier when we are sleep deprived but we also lack the willpower that we need to avoid unhealthy foods.

Knowing what could be causing stubborn fat, you have more power to overcome this problem with good habits that are right for your body.
